I absolutely love the Pioneers simulation. I have done it several times, and each time it gets better and better. As I teach gifted 3-5, the full research project is difficult to squeeze in on a limited time budget. I find that the students think the Native Americans were all savages. Although there were some rougher tribes, many of the tribes that were encountered on the trail were cordial, if not friendly. To help students see more than the Hollywood version of Native Americans, I have them research one tribe and present a stamp collection to the post office for possible submission. We discuss how the drawings and/or images should be detailed and accurate. They also need to present their stamps at a "postal board meeting" in class to teach others about their findings. Many of the students are amazed at how the Native Americans were generally peaceful and often traded with the pioneers for supplies.

implementation for the civil war. awarding points. the tiny little details made it a bit challenging. granted it was the first time. but it has so much potential.
